of the Year {2026}

The South Central Kentuckian of the Year Award annually honors an individual or organization for excellence in leadership as demonstrated by outstanding initiative, impact of work and inspiration of others. The purpose of this award is to honor people in the community who are making significant contributions through their life’s work. Every day people in our community make a difference. We want to celebrate these people who make giving back a priority for themselves, their family or their business.

Mickeye & Mike Murphy

Michael Murphy was the co-owner and CEO of The Murphy Construction Group which includes Scott & Murphy, Inc., Scott, Murphy & Daniel, LLC and Hartz Contracting.  He was also an owner and partner in various industrial and commercial development companies.

Upon graduations from Western Kentucky University (1976) with a BS degree in Civil Engineering, Mike began his career with Jim Scott at Scotty’s Contracting.  In 1982, Mr. Scott initiated a new division entitled Scott & Murphy, Inc. where the two became partners in a newly formed concrete division. In the company’s first year in business (formerly the concrete division of Scotty’s), it had revenues of $1.8M and had 40 employees.

Seven years later Mr. Scott allowed Mike to purchase his interest in the entity.  That next year (1984), Danny Daniel joined Murphy’s company to initiate a building division within Scott & Murphy, Inc.

 A fourth-generation contractor/engineer from Bowling Green, Mike had over 45 years of experience in civil, concrete and building construction.  With over 250 team members, their companies provide general contracting, design/build and construction management services within a 100-mile radius of their home office in Bowling Green.  Offices are also located in Hopkinsville and Owensboro. Combined revenues for 2025 were in excess of $234M defining The Murphy Construction Group as the premier contractor between Louisville and Nashville, along the I-65 corridor.

Mike had been active in the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce for over four decades. He and his team members have sponsored numerous events and functions within the chamber, rendered substantial financial assistance & professional services, as well as have been an active President’s Club Member for many years.

In 1977, Mike received The Small Business Person of The Year Award from the BG Chamber.

Mike served as a director on The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, received the Outstanding Board Member of the Year in 2000 and in 2001 served as its Chairman.  He also served as The Chairman of the Bowling Green Area Economic Development Authority in 2002 & 2003 and has served on that board for over two decades.

Mike has served as The Capital Campaign Chairman for capital construction projects including:

-The Student Mall Plaza on the Western Kentucky University campus

-The St. Joseph Catholic School Expansion

-The new Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Building in Downtown Bowling Green

-The Hospitality House on the Medical Center Health campus in Bowling Green.  After raising the funds, Mike also donated/served as the construction manager for these projects.

Mike served on the St. Joseph Catholic School Board for two decades (1985 to 2005) and was awarded the Distinguished Patron Award in 1997.

The Kiwanis International Foundation inscribed Mike Murphy on "The International Tablet of Honor" in 2003 for his vision and work to construct the third largest Soap Box Derby Track in the world in Bowling Green, Kentucky at the Phil Moore Park.

Mike served as a local and state director of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Kentuckiana and received the ABC National Membership Award for establishing an ABC Chapter in Bowling Green and for soliciting the most members by one individual in a one-year period In the United States.

In 2010, Mike received the Bowling Green Community Impact Award for Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year.

Mike served four, four-year terms as a director on the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors and then served as its Chairman in 2014.

In 2015, Mike was inducted as a Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Laureate.

Mike served as a Director on the board of the Kentucky Community & Technical College from 2008 to 2019.

Mike also served for a decade on the Med Center Health Foundation Board which creates funding and endowments for the not-for-profit hospital and its associate charitable entities, and he also served on the board for Community Foundation of South Central KY.

In 2020, Mike received the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce "Herb Smith Lifetime Achievement Award" presented for outstanding service to the Bowling Green community. This is one of seven ever such awards given over the last two decades.

Mike participated in and gave his time and support to many other area non-profit organizations, activities, schools and churches.

Mike and his wife, Mickeye, were married for 47 years.  They have three adult children, Nancye, Sarah and Cole, and with their spouses, have eight beautiful grandchildren who love MiMi and E’Daddy very much.

The History Behind the Limestone Award

FOUNDATIONAL BEGINNINGS

Four Irish immigrants, John J., Peter J., Thomas J. & William J. Murphy established a limestone business in Bowling Green, KY, circa 1886. They were stone masons and engineers known as the MURPHY BROTHERS COMPANY. The brothers operated a stone quarry where they removed and cut limestone for many of the initial infrastructure projects in South Central Kentucky and other parts of the Commonwealth.

Many of the buildings, first constructed more than a century ago, remain today as a testament to the foundation upon which they sit. Some of the most notable are State Street Methodist Church and the Burton Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to buildings, the Murphys quarried and cut the stones for the street curbing for many communities including Bowling Green.

When John J. Murphy’s grandson, G. Michael Murphy began his career in construction in 1976, any opportunity to salvage these “stones of the foundation of our community” was preserved as a memory of their family’s business beginnings in South Central Kentucky.

Just as the philanthropic work of the individuals who receive this award are foundational to their community, the base of this award is salvaged limestone and is intended to represent the purpose of The Community Foundation of South Central Kentucky.
